Prague, Czech Republic
This single-storey floating prefab in Prague was designed by Czech based practice Atelier SAD. Dubbed ‘Port X’, the houseboat is made of six ’C’ shaped wooden modules designed as an experiment in modern living. ‘The main idea is that you can connect and expand,’ says its architect Jerry Koza. ‘You can live in three modules, then add another for a studio or a meeting room.’ This incarnation sleeps up to four guests, has a kitchen and bathroom.
Port X is sited on the Holešovice waterfront – a thriving neighbourhood packed with cafes, restaurants and museums – close to the Centre for Contemporary Art (DOX), as well as the old Holešovice Brewery.
Floating on the Spree River Bay in East Berlin is the Modern Boat, named after its pared-back, contemporary interiors. The vessel comprises a double bedroom, living room and open-plan kitchen, but ‘what makes it really special are the huge windows opening up towards the water right in front of you,’ says its owner. Views from the deck looks out over the cityscape with the on the horizon.

These sustainable waterside lodges are built from wood and powered by geothermal and solar energy. Zijlstra Architecten designed the four-structure complex in 2011, with cabins ranging from a compact two-person, two-storey lodge to a family home that accommodates four. Located on the site of a former shipyard on the outskirts of the historic town of IJlst, each property comes with its own sinneskou for exploring the surrounding Frisian islands.
Completed in 2015, the X-Float by local practice Agaligo Studio puts a modern spin on the traditional rafts popular in the Kanchanaburi region of Thailand.
