Interiors at this Yucca Valley retreat are an international affair

A film-worthy space created by a designer and a cinematographer

Colour, pattern and styles mix inside Californian desert retreat, Oeste Home, whose rooms are a whirlwind mix of North African, European and Oaxacan influences brought together under one roof.

The Yucca Valley bolthole is a project by designer Claire Thomas and cinematographer Yayo Ahumada, who have filled the ranch house with finds from around the globe.

The pair stripped the house back to its bones and started anew on its interiors, with the ambition Oeste Home would become a location for films, adverts and music videos. Working on a low budget, they used reclaimed materials and DIY to bring their vision to life, drawing on ideas they’d picked up from trips to other countries.

Terrazo flooring, tortilla pans turned into light fittings and an Oaxacan-style kitchen and clay objects all nod to Ahumada’s Mexican heritage. Still, there’s also furniture made using boulders found on-site,  as well as Moroccan-style tiling and a salvaged Tudor window.

The result is both harmonious and coherent.
