This rose-tinted home was built from the bones of an old stable on the island of São Miguel in the Azores.

Italian-Portuguese practice Mezzo Atelier transformed the ramshackle barn into Pink House – a contemporary holiday home that riffs on the traditional dwellings dotted across the islands.

‘The design’s main goal was to keep the construction’s character, lines, and its rural atmosphere,’ says the practice.

A repaired stone wall meets the building’s new, bright pink façade, which is broken by carefully placed windows that draw light into the two-storey main house.

Nods to Azorean tradition can be found inside the Portuguese holiday home – available to rent via Boutique Homes from €200 per night – via whitened wood, and aged-pink and ochre tones.

Ceiling beams have been left exposed, lending a rustic bent to the contemporary house, and jibing with concrete floors. Furniture has also been custom-made by Mezzo Atelier using Japanese cedar, and pine beams that were recycled from the site.

Glass doors are dotted across the villa’s ground floor, opening it up to five acres of orchards, woodlands and gardens – including a swimming pool. The living room, dining area and kitchen can be found on the upper floor, and all open out onto the a terrace overlooking the gardens.

The main house sleeps up to five people, while a second, one-bedroom guest house – also part of the complex – can be rented separately.
