A new vinyl listening space has opened in Hong Kong for record collectors, analogue enthusiasts and the city’s ‘left-field dance music’ scene.

The Music Room – located within Potato Head Hong Kong, designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto – houses over 8,000 records, hand-picked by German DJ and producer Johnny Hiller and selection of renowned dealers.

It sits behind Kaum restaurant and is accessed via a hidden corridor and doorway. The last space to be completed in the complex, the Music Room features wood panelling, mid-century inspired furniture and a soundsystem selected by Hiller that ticks all the right boxes.

This includes JBL Pro Blue series loudspeakers, Macintosh tube pre amps and amplifiers, a custom-made rotary mixer from Japan, vintage Klipschorn speakers and, of course, a pair of Technics SL-1200s.

Potato Head Hong Kong opened in late June and is Fujimoto’s first project in the city. He has used the thin white frames that have become a signature of his work – from House NA in Tokyo to the 2013 Serpentine Pavilion – in the store’s entrance. They create display space for Potato Head’s homeware store and a coffee bar, which sits in front of the restaurant and listening space.

The Music Room will host a series of listening events, from classic LP evenings to a monthly Ethiopian jazz 7″s night, while you can catch music from across the soul spectrum on normal nights.
