Lahofer winery offers a taste of brutalism among Dobšice’s vineyards

Sweeping curves soften the concrete and glass form of this Czech Republic winery, designed by local practice Chybik + Kristof.

Lahofer winery in Dobšice features a visitor centre and tasting room, which takes cues from local Moravian wine-making traditions. It has a vast barrel-vaulted interior supported by a grid of arched beams, which emulate the style of the region’s wine cellars.

Its roof starts at ground level on one side of the building and sweeps up over the structure like a cresting wave. This gentle incline allows access to its top via steps that form a public amphitheatre.

The 42,000 square foot brutalist winery has views over vine rows through glazed walls and a ceiling mural by Czech artist Patrik Hábl. To the rear are two production halls, which produce wine made from central European grape varieties.
