Norman Foster’s Bloomberg headquarters has won the 2018 RIBA Stirling Prize, pipping Tate St Ives’ cliff-side extension and the Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre to the post.

The £1bn European headquarters has been described as a ‘gargantuan temple to gadgetry’, complete with a gill-like facade, vacuum-flush toilets and energy efficient features that mean it uses 70% water and 40% less energy than surrounding office blocks.

The RIBA’s president Ben Derbyshire said the practice ‘have not just raised the bar for office design and city planning, but smashed the ceiling.’

Visitors to the complex enter a futuristic foyer decked with cantilevered glass lifts, while staff work from flexible workstations connected by a vast bronze ramp that snakes its way up through the building. Elsewhere, a ceiling of made of 2.5-metre aluminium panels, studded with twinkling LEDs, adds to the space-age look.
