History is etched into the walls of this Italian holiday home, once an ancient convent and later an aristocrat’s residence.

Trotula Charming House is in the centre of the Old Town in Salerno, which sits on the Amalfi Coast, and was originally built for the order of Benedictine Olivetan monks. It received a lavish update in the 1600s when it was converted into palazzo replete with ornate 17th-century frescoes.

Architects at Work studio has restored the storied manse, converting it into two adjoining apartments dubbed Olympia and Julius. Both sleep six and are available via The Perfect Hideaway from $350 per night.

The studio has retained the building’s richly coloured 18th-century plaster walls and uncovered soaring timber beamed ceilings, previously hidden by false ceilings. Interiors blend rustic with contemporary finishes such as pristine tiled floors, and handcrafted furniture.

Bedrooms have views out towards the nearby Amalfi Coast, and Trotula Charming House is steps from Museo Roberto Papi and Giardino della Minerva.
