Sam Jacob Studio has created a shed within a shed (within a shed) for a new installation at material maker Sto’s Clerkenwell hub.

For One Thing After Another, the practice took a digital scan of an ordinary shed to create a scaled-up, 1.8x model out of Verolith – a material made mostly of volcanic stone. Its interiors, clad in mirrored Sto-Ventec glass, reflect the original shed it houses.

There’s also a miniature replica inside the original shed, creating a Russian Doll-type effect of structures within structures.

‘We started with a shed almost because it was so boring, so generic, so average – everybody knows what a shed is like,’ said Jacob, director of the studio. ‘The changes that come through the process are more readable.’

One Thing After Another was conceived as an exploration of how digital processes show up in real-world architecture. The bigger version of the shed, for instance, has surface imperfections caused by enlarging the original 3D scan – akin to the grainy complexion of a low-resolution image.

‘It’s about enjoying the glitches that come from being in the digital world, showing the fact that when you lower the resolution, you get these facets,’ added Jacob. ‘It’s acknowledging the fact that the digital world has its own constraints, which is different to the world of making stuff physically.’

One Thing After Another will be on show at Sto Werkstatt’s gallery space for the duration of Clerkenwell Design Week, from 24 to 26 May, and the London Festival of Architecture, which runs until end of June.
