Wun’s Tea Room brings 1960s late night Hong Kong to London

Capturing the spirit of open-air Cantonese and neon-lit bars

There’s a new face in London’s Soho – albeit one that draws heavily on the nostalgia of 1960s Hong Kong with its peppermint green walls and wicker chairs.

Wun’s Tea Room & Bar is the latest offering from husband-and-wife duo Alex Peffly and Z He. They have transformed the Greek Street site of their Bun House restaurant (which has relocated to China Town) for the new outpost, with He drawing on her childhood to inspire the restaurant’s interiors,  ‘captur[ing] the spirit of 1960s late night Hong Kong’.

Distressed brick walls, wicker-patterned tiles and pops of floral prints complete the look in the dining area. The basement bar meanwhile remains much the same, with the addition of neon signage and velvet seating – a sophisticated late-night sibling for the open-air street cafe inspired space above.

Traditional Cantonese dishes fill the London restaurant’s menu: clay pot rice dishes topped with soy-brassed aubergine, lard-fried shallots, as well as satay beef noodles with a fried egg; pan-seared dumplings and Iberico char sui.
