Architect Daniela Colli has transformed a former first-class waiting room in Florence’s Santa Maria Novella train station into a copper-tinted boulangerie.
The space is the latest outpost for the VyTA Santa Margherita group of bakeries and restaurants. Colli has retained many of the original features of the Rationalist station – designed by Giovanni Michelucci of architecture collective, Gruppo Toscano, in 1932 – while giving it a contemporary upgrade.

At the heart of the boulangerie is an L-shaped glass and copper display counter, crowned by a copper-lattice overhang and pendant lighting. Visitors can linger at the marble-topped bar, backed by a mirrored wall, which creates the illusion of a seemingly endless space.
Vintage photographs of the station hang on the wood-panelled walls, echoing the boulangerie’s past life.
