This ultra-minimal home contrasts Formentera’s rugged wilderness

Es Pujol de Sera opens up to the landscape

The clean lines of Es Pujol de Sera bisect the scrubby landscape of Formentera, standing in stark contrast with the Balearic island’s spiky hinterland.

Architect Mariá Castelló Martínez designed the island holiday home, which sits in 33,000 sq m of wheat and barley fields. Es Pujol de Sera is arranged across a single, rectangular volume, with one fully glazed end covered in sliding wooden shutters.

According to Martínez, the island villa’s austere appearance references the traditional dry stone walls of buildings nearby, as well as the flatness of the surrounding fields.

The minimalism continues inside, where furniture is sparse. Wood chairs and tables, and panelled walls add warmth to the contemporary home. A covered front terrace offers much-needed shade from the midday sun, as well as a place to watch the sunset.

Es Pujol de Sera is available to rent via The Sibarist as a holiday home, event space and film location, with price on application. Formentera is the smallest of Spain’s Balearic islands: its quiet, sleepy pace contrasts its more famous neighbour, Ibiza, a short boat-ride away.
