Sweden’s whimsical ‘Accordion House’ is for sale

With a turtle head extension

The ‘Dragspelhuset’ or ‘Accordion House’ is one of Sweden’s most instagramed buildings, and now the space-defying cabin is seeking new owners.

Maartje Lammers and Boris Zeisser – principals of the Rotterdam-based practice 24H Architecture – bought a late 19th-century cabin on the shore of Lake Övre Gla in the Glaskogen nature reserve as their family retreat. They added a turtle-like extension, operated by pullies and levers, to skirt local by-laws which forbid the construction of new buildings and foundations along the shoreline.

The organic, Tardis-like Swedish property expands from 45 to 72 sq ft to create extra internal living space in summer, and a cosy cocoon in winter. Hardy cedar-shingles on the hut extension lend it a primitive look that is echoed by overlapping timber interiors, hung with reindeer pelts.

The Dragspelhuset has featured in international press, and the coveted cabin is listed via Agentur fastighetsförmedling for 1.975m kr.
