Fancy reinventing your life on the Italian island of Sicily – but on a tight budget? A crop of hilltop homes has hit the market in Sambuca, starting from just €1.

Sambuca is surrounded by woodlands and Blue Flag beaches but it has a dwindling population and dozens of its two-storey stone homes – owned by the city hall – are now empty. Deputy mayor Giuseppe Cacioppo announced the initiative to repopulate the town and attract foreign investors.

Of course, there’s a caveat.

The vacant pink-hued properties need varying degrees of work and buyers must commit to refurbishing them within three years. They’ll also have to fork out a €5,000 security deposit (which will be refunded when work is complete) and spend at least €15,000 restoring their new home.
