There’s more than a hint of Blade Runner at this light installation by Phillip K Smith III, which bathes visitors in glowing, shifting colours.
The piece, 10 Columns, is the inaugural show hosted at the Bridge Projects gallery in Los Angeles – the first permanent home for the art programme of the same name.

Smith has created almost total darkness inside the gallery – which has blacked out its windows and door for the installation – punctuating it with illuminated screens mounted on concrete columns. These cycle through various shades, from the blue of a TV or phone screen through to the warm orange of a sunset, casting an eerie glow onto the surrounding industrial space.

It’s not the first time the artist has played with perception, having previously designed a mirrored shack in the middle of the Californian desert as well as a ring of reflective columns for the Desert X festival.
10 Columns is on display at Bridge Projects in LA until February 16, 2020.
