Want to live like an architect for the year? Peter Blake’s modernist home The Pinwheel House is for rent in the Hamptons, New York.
Blake is known for his airy beach houses that dot the Long Island coast, but The Pin Wheel House was designed for his own family in 1954 and is one of his most innovative and experimental designs.
Originally conceived as a simple square box, The Pinwheel House’s four exterior walls were constructed as moving panels of plate glass and painted plywood mounted on metal tracks. These sliding walls could open the house up to the breeze – making it look like a giant pinwheel in the process – or closed to protect it from the harsher elements.
The modernist holiday home – available to rent for $170,000 year-round via Out East – sits in the hamlet of Water Mill in Southampton. It was expanded in 1989 in keeping with the style of Blake’s original and comes with five bedrooms, a swimming pool and a 1.2-acre garden bordered by a nature reserve to the west.
