This new Mumbai cafe is an experiment in eco-design – its furniture and fixtures are made entirely from recyclable cardboard.

Cardboard is India’s first cafe outfitted with the material and is located in the city’s Bandra Kurla Complex. Architect Nuru Karim of practice NUDES designed the space using parametric modelling, and everything from the interior landscape to the light fixtures, signage and menus is made with the corrugated material.

‘Cardboard is one of those versatile materials that we experience in our everyday lives, but rarely employ in contemporary design,’ the practice told The Better India.

The project took around seven months to complete (including four months of prototyping and three months of construction). Cardboard tables have been wax laminated to future-proof them against spillages, while the cafe’s sinuous, layered walls provide acoustic soundproofing.
