This glass and stone holiday home sits on a remote peninsula in New Zealand’s south island overlooking the sea.

‘Seascape’ was designed with couples in mind, especially honeymooners or those yearning for a digital detox. Reached via helicopter – or 40 minutes drive along cliff-top farm tracks from Christchurch – the house’s closest neighbours are of the wildlife variety, particularly dolphins and seals who frequent the secluded bay.

‘When designing in beautiful natural environments like these it helps to take the positive view that human beings and therefore our constructions are a natural part of the planet,’ says its architect Andrew Patterson, who designed the holiday home in 2013.

He used locally quarried stone for the New Zealand holiday home, which is built into the side of a rocky slope, and took inspiration for the property’s zigzag roofline from ragged cliffs nearby.

The contemporary cottage – for rent directly via Annandale – comprises just three rooms: a lobby, living room and bedroom, and separate bathroom.

Floor-to-ceiling glazing provides panoramic views of the private cove, while polished concrete floors contrast timber ceilings and stone feature walls. There’s a sculptural wood burning stove for cooler evenings, and outside, there’s private spa facilities.

Seascape’s turf roof helps ensconce it even further into the landscape while eco-credentials clock high thanks to its rain harvesting and wastewater treatment systems.

The holiday home is part of part of a 4,000 sq ft coastal cattle farm that dates back to the 19th century. Guests can make the most of the estate’s cliffside walking trails, go kayaking, dolphin spotting or while the hours away enjoying views of the pristine landscape.
