Galway’s rugged landscape has been set aglow for a luminous artwork by Kari Kola which recast the Connemara mountains as the Northern Lights.
Kola claims the piece, dubbed Savage Beauty, is ‘the largest site-specific artwork ever created’. He installed 1,000 gently pulsing LEDs across a 5km stretch of Lough Na Fooey’s shoreline in vibrant blue and emerald green shades that evoke nature’s most dramatic light show – the aurora borealis.
The giant lightwork was commissioned as part of Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture events program and was meant to be on show from 14 – 17 March to public.
Due to the spread of COVID-19 Kola has released a digital version of the piece that can be enjoyed without needing to visit the site.
