Switch House by Herzog & de Meuron

Tate Modern’s Switch House and IKEA’s flat-pack refugee shelter are among the architecture nominees for the Design Museum’s annual Beazley ‘Designs of the Year’.

The twisted brick Tate Modern extension – designed by Herzog and de Meuron – also faces competition from OMA’s gilded Prada Foundation in Milan, which revived a derelict early 20th-century distillery.

Among other buildings vying for the prize are Wayne Hemingway’s fairground Dreamland Margate and Turner Prize-winner Assemble’s Granby Workshop.

‘Architecture’ is one of six categories in the annual design competition – now in its ninth year – which also include digital, fashion, graphics, products and transport. David Bowie’s Blackstar album artwork and a sexual health testing kit have also been nominated for the prize, which celebrates the most innovative innovative products, concepts and designers from the last 12 months.

The nominees will go on show at the Design Museum’s new Kensington digs, renovated by John Pawson, on 24 November. Winners will be selected from each category and an overall winner will be crowned on 26 January 2017.
