Faux wood panelling and telephone-wire lights recall the 90s at this Montréal coffee bar designed by Ménard Dworkind.

Caffettiera Caffé Bar’s owner wanted to evoke fond memories of the decade and tasked the design studio with recreating it in the coffee shop’s interiors while also offering a relaxed place for people to grab an espresso before work.

Black-and-white checkerboard tiles run throughout the Montreal coffee shop, contrasting the sky blue ceiling and colour-blocked laminate tabletops. According to the studio, the fake wood panelling that wraps around the cafe was a special nostalgic request from the owner that adds a kitsch touch to the postmodern interiors.

Guests sit at steel chairs or on banquettes, all upholstered in tan leather, or drink their coffee, Italian-style, standing at the counter. Orders are taken from behind a black terrazzo bar, with sliding signs mounted on an orange steel beam showing where to order and where to pay.

Lambert & Fils contributed the pendant lights, which hang on a coiled yellow telephone wire. To further evoke memories of the bygone decade, Ménard Dworkind has installed vintage books, toys, photos and stickers. The bar and cafe is located on the city’s Stanley Street.
