Landscape artist James Turrell has completed his latest Skyspace sculpture – building a lightroom atop Austria’s Arlberg mountains.
Skyspace-Lech in ‘Tannegg’, Oberlech, sits 1,780 metres above the sea at the end of a hiking trail. The installation is housed in a stone building, designed in collaboration with architecture practice Baumschlager-Eberle, and reached via a 15-metre-long tunnel that has been aligned with views of Biberkopf peak.

Inside the structure is an oval 9-meter-diameter volume, dubbed the ‘sensing room’. An opening in its domed ceiling frames unobstructed views of the sky.

Lighting specialist Zumtobel collaborated with Turrell on the mountainside art project, which is accessible to hikers and skiers all year round.
