An ex-Mission hall hides huge volumes in South London

The former church has adaptable spaces

Architect Alex Nikjoo collaborated with the artist owners of this old Mission hall in South London, renovating it into a soaring three-bedroom home dubbed Utopia House.

The Deptford building dates back to 1906 and was dedicated to philanthropist Joseph Mead. Nikjoo stripped it back to its bones, removing additions and layers to uncover the original structure during its adaptive reuse.

A vaulted ceiling crowns the vast main living space, which can be reconfigured and adapted as different zones. White beams, natural materials and whitewashed walls hone a tranquil vibe in this space, which houses a hand-built kitchen at the rear.

Overhead is a zen work-from-home office – a cantilevered mezzanine that peeks out over the living room. It ‘adopts a pulpit like stance above the kitchen,’ says listing agency Aucoot, which is marketing the London property for £.1635m.

Bedrooms occupy what was once the vestry, and there’s a good-sized roof terrace, complete with planters and a deck area.
