Worthing council has signed a deal for 162 flat-pack homes designed by Ikea-owned company BoKlok in a bid to tackle soaring house prices.

It will mark the first time these prefab homes have been built in the UK, however, BoKlok has already constructed thousands in Sweden, Finland and Norway.

The company – which is a partnership between Ikea and Skanska – says the apartments have a much lower environmental impact than most building projects, thanks to its use of timber frames, and ability to recycle leftover material.

Homes will come with flooring and wall tiles in place, as well as an Ikea kitchen, and range in size from one to three bedrooms. Worthing Council hasn’t divulged prices yet but says apartments will come with a 25-year mortgage that’s affordable for a single parent on an average salary for the area (around £25,458 in 2015).
