A new Memphis-style mural has popped up in London’s Leyton, designed by Camille Walala and funded by the local community.
The artwork stretches across several high street shops, which have been covered in the artist’s recognisable stripes, circles and triangles.
Eight buildings in total have been given a makeover, using recycled and carbon-absorbing paint. Leyton locals helped to pay for the piece, which was supported by crowdfunding as well as a £25k grant from the Mayor’s office.
‘Art and colour have an amazing power to spread positivity, especially at the scale of the street,’ says Walala, of the piece. ‘It’s wonderful to have an opportunity to have such a significant impact on the look and feel of an entire neighbourhood.’
Her words ring particularly true at the moment, as the high street struggles to recover from the after-effects of lockdown.
