Architectural designer Angela Patterson built this unusual octagonal barn as her own home in 2014.

Constructed from steel, glass and wood, 401 Collins Street incorporates oversized barn doors that open onto four acres of woodland in Hillsdale, New York State.

The contemporary barn is one of a series of ‘rural lofts’ Patterson has designed in bucolic settings and its minimalist design draws from her design experience for retail brands, including Bergdorf Goodman and Calvin Klein.

Interiors of the 2,200 sq ft bolthole (on the market via Houlihan Lawrence for $1.275m) are gallery-like, with white volumes and polished concrete floors. It’s currently furnished like a gallery too, with pieces including a 1953 Revolt chair by F Kramer, a Robert Rauschenberg chair, and a 1968 sofa by Kazuhide Takahama. A dramatic floating fireplace anchors the living room, which is crowned by a cupola.

The two-bedroom Hudson Valley property is about 90 minutes drive from New York City.
