Steak restaurant Smith & Wollensky opens in London’s Adelphi Building

US steak joint Smith & Wollensky has taken over a two-floor space inside London’s Grade II-listed Adelphi Building by the Strand.

The 15,000 sq ft restaurant – designed by Martin Brudnizki – pays tribute to the art deco heritage of Colcutt and Hamp’s 1938 building.

‘London doesn’t have many genuinely art deco buildings of this calibre and so the Adelphi Building proved both an honour and inspiration throughout the whole design process,’ Brudnizki says.

The designer chose to retain the ground floor’s original front door while adding timber wall panelling and a patterned floor feature in a nod to the original 1930s architecture.

Smith & Wollensky also has a butchery quarter and dry-ageing room in addition to its two bars, two dining areas and three private rooms.

The Adelphi Building is currently undergoing £30 million of refurbishment works to modernise 190,000 sq ft of its office space. Expected to finish this summer, the programme will also see the creation of a new landscaped roof terrace overlooking the Thames.
