The great British architectural bake-off is upon us… London architects have donned their aprons to design a Gingerbread City at the Museum of Architecture, swapping concrete for the sweet stuff.

Practices including Foster and Partners, vPPR, Carl Turner Architects, and Make Architects have designed, baked and decorated edible designs for Gingerbread City. These range from icing-coated opera houses and town halls to Smartie-covered high rise towers and housing estates.

‘The Gingerbread City is about broadening discussion about what makes a good place,’ says Hilary Satchwell, direct at Tibbalds Planning and Urban Design, which master-planned the miniature city.

Among the sweet offerings are ‘Crump Towers’, cookie-cutter cottages and cake-tiered high-rises. Less desirable features of our urban landscape have also been given a sugar-coating: construction cranes are made from strawberry laces, while graffiti is sprayed on buildings with icing sugar.

The Gingerbread City runs at MoA’s pop-up space on 10 Thurloe Place, South Kensington until 22 December 2016.
