Helsinki has created a virtual reality version of the city, which includes Alvar Aalto’s house – meaning design lovers can strap on their headsets and tour his home from afar.
Designed as a ‘digital twin’ of the real-life capital, Virtual Helsinki recreates some of the city’s architectural landmarks and tourist hotspots. Those with a headset can visit Senate Square and the Helsinki Cathedral, as well as Lonna Island, before heading to the VR version of Alvar Aalto’s home – usually only open via guided tours.
Located in Munkkiniemi, the property is part workspace and part private residence and was designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto and completed in 1936. Every detail has been faithfully recreated, from its brick walls and wooden panelling to the grand piano and various furniture pieces.
Helsinki plans to add new destinations to Virtual Helsinki in the coming months, hoping it offers a lower carbon alternative to real-life travel. It’s available via several different VR headsets, as well as a Youtube 360 video.
