The public will be able to snoop inside architect Sir John Soane’s private apartments and model room for the first time in 160 years from 19 May.
Conservation specialists Julian Harrap Architects have restored his living quarters on the second floor of Sir John Soane’s Museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, which fell into disrepair after his death in 1837. The rooms were converted into the museum curator’s apartment in the 19th century, but have now been resurrected, using detailed sketches and watercolours from the time.
Soane’s model room, bedroom, bathroom, book passage, oratory and Mrs Soane’s morning room will all open their doors in May. Chief of the attractions will be a custom-built stand displaying some of Soane’s 121 architectural models, one of the largest collections of its kind in the world.
