This tropical retreat hides among the trees in Brazil’s Bahia and comes wrapped in a ‘woven’ skin.

Muxarabi Villa was designed by architect André Luque in 2014 and sits at the top of Trancoso’s cliffs, surrounded by the dense Atlantic Forest. Conceived as two overlapping pavilions, the Brazilian holiday home features an intricate muxarabi façade that ‘alludes to the famous Bahian lace,’ says the architect. This perforated sheath keeps the house cool, and creates a soft, dappled-light effect inside the building.

Luque built the property – for sale via Christie’s International Real Estate for $1.9m – around the site’s existing topography, leaving jungle vegetation untouched by the building, which itself is made from sustainable timber.

Its living room, kitchen and dining room are accessed via a bridge that leads into the heart of the house. Here, floor-to-ceiling glass doors open out onto the property’s terrace and garden, complete with a 50 sq m infinity swimming pool set at tree level.

The master bedroom faces the garden and rainforest, and is protected from the sun and rain by a pergola. Four more guest bedrooms can also be found in the the second pavilion, and are accessed by a shaded veranda.

In addition to the gardens, there’s a rooftop lawn that looks out above the tree canopy towards nearby Coqueiros Beach. Muxarabi Villa is part of the Altos de Trancoso community, and is also just 10 minutes walk from Trancoso’s Quadrado.
