Property of the week: an architect’s mid-century home in the Australian bush

Peter Muller’s former abode is shaped by the New South Wales landscape

An architect’s home is his playground, as this mid-century bush dwelling by Peter Muller attests.

The Australian built Bynya House in Palm Beach for his family in 1954, making the most of the views over the surrounding New South Wales landscape.

Communal spaces feature floor-to-ceiling glass windows framing the panoramas of the bush and Pittwater. In the living room, a natural sandstone outcrop has been incorporated into the fabric of the 2,476 sq ft building, and doors lead out onto two large outdoor terraces and a swimming pool.

The three-bedroom building’s relationship to its surroundings echoes the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, as does Muller’s use of simple, natural materials. ‘I wanted to feel that I was living in the site as well as the house,’ Muller once said.

Its stepped, cantilevered form has been given a contemporary twist by the current owners, who’ve fitted a zinc roof following Muller’s original design. They also added a chef-standard kitchen and new bathrooms to the property to bring it up to date.

Bynya House is being marketed via Modern House with price on application.
