Curios and artefacts from around the world fill Porto’s Torel 1884 hotel, which celebrates Portugal’s rich history of exploration.

The hotel is located in a 135-year-old mansion, not far from the city’s riverfront, that’s had its high ceilings, ornate mouldings and original tiled floors restored to their former glory.

Porto studio Nano Design took care of the interiors, looking to Portugal’s historic trade routes with Asia, Africa and the Americas for inspiration, and filling the Torel 1884 with pieces found in from around the world.

Guests won’t be short on things to admire, with walls filled with fans, masks, textiles and artwork, and even the odd travelling trunk that’s been repurposed by the practice as furniture. Local craftsmen have also added to the interiors, creating everything from handmade tassels for guest rooms to rattan and marble counters for the hotel bar.

Torel 1884 has 12 rooms (starting from £172 per night) in the mansion house, reached by a grand stone staircase. Guests won’t have far to go to eat either, with the hotel bistro located downstairs in a room filled with plants and botanical art.
