The fashion world has lost a force of nature with the passing of Karl Lagerfeld at the age of 85.

Lagerfeld was a creative powerhouse, best known for his theatrical designs and elaborate runway shows. He joined Chanel in 1983, reinventing the brand a decade after the death of Coco Chanel, and he also held long-term positions at Italian brand Fendi, Chloé and his own eponymous fashion house.

The German-born designer’s Paris runway shows were often the highlight of fashion calendar as he created immersive worlds for his sartorial creations, from airport terminals inside the Grand Palais to a Silicon Valley-inspired Digital Data Centre and a cobbled Parisian street – complete with a puddle.

Newspapers report Lagerfeld had been unwell for several weeks, though the cause of his death has not been confirmed.
