The clapboard home where Philip Roth wrote his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel American Pastoral is on the market – with his writing studio intact.
The three-bedroom Connecticut property comes with 150 acres of land, which includes woods, ponds, and a swimming pool. It’s close to the town of Warren, where Roth sought out a secluded rural spot to focus on his writing. He purchased the original 18th-century home in 1972, and gradually added to the estate over the years, in an attempt to maintain his solitude.
Aspiring novelists can retire to the same writing studio that Roth worked in, which has a fireplace as well as views of trees and the estate’s nearby barn.
The author’s home – which the Wall Street Journal reports is on the market for $2.925m – includes a library, which is filled with the novelist’s book collection. This is due to be removed in the coming months, leaving the shelving empty for the next owner to fill.
