Mies-inspired Modernist home lists for $575k in Knoxville, Tennessee

Tennessee is better known for its country music than its architecture, but this Mies van der Rohe-inspired home hits a high note.

On the market via agent Barbara Apking of Coldwell Banker for $575,000, the boxy glass house was designed by University of Tennessee architecture professor William Starke Shell.

The clifftop home sits on a 2.3-acre plot in South Knoxville overlooking the Tennessee River, and features a flat roof post design, unpunctuated by vast glass panels which look out onto its tree-covered surrounds.

Though the 1,600 sq ft pavilion home channels a midcentury modern vibe it was actually completed in 2013, some 35 years after Shell first acquired the land. Shell – who worked for a time in Chicago with Mies – also scooped the American Institute of Architects East Tennessee Merit Award in 2015 for its design.

Granite floors run throughout, while moveable mahogany cabinetry and bespoke furniture designed by Shell for the US property is also included in the sale.
