This Girona farmhouse in the Catalan countryside has undergone a total transformation.

Architect Gloria Duran was tasked with reviving the masia – located in Girona’s Baix Empordà
– which was in a bad state of repair.

‘It used to be a residential country house, with agricultural and ranching activities in some areas,’ says the architect, who’s become a specialist in restoring ruined masias in the region.

Traces of the 1850 Spanish property’s early agricultural roots can be read across the two storey dwelling: original wooden rafters, tiles, and vaulted Catalan ceilings have been left bare, as have stone walls, which have been repaired and left raw.

In the living room – which has soaring ceilings – a contemporary steel fireplace and cool concrete floors have been installed, while an old hay fork has also been mounted on the wall.

Elsewhere, the Girona farmhouse’s l’escala de volta has been restored, and juxtaposed with contemporary pendant lighting.

Old meets new upstairs too, where a vast glass pane stretches the width of the 729 sq m house, looking down onto the shared living spaces below. The master bedroom, which has its own lounge, has views of the Empordà.

Mas Moscat is on the market via Lucas Fox for €2.9m, and the house comes with 26,000 sq ft of land, including outside terraces and a swimming pool, which Duran landscape-designed.

Mas Moscat is in the medieval village of Pals, a few kilometres from the Costa Brava in Catalan’s Baix Empordà.
