Guests are surrounded by rugs and furniture by Portuguese artisans at Lisbon’s Bairro Alto Hotel, which is fresh from a bumper-sized refurb by architect Eduardo Souto de Moura.
The Lisbon hotel has taken over a block between the city’s Bairro Alto and Chiado neighbourhoods, extending its original 18th century home into three adjoining buildings.
Porto studio Atelier Bastir was responsible for the hotel’s original interiors and has returned to give them a refresh, bringing in pieces created by local artists and mixing vintage and antique furniture. Its 87 bedrooms – which start from €315 – are decked out in cool shades of blue, grey and white, punctuated with patterned textiles and cane-covered wardrobes.
In the evenings, guests can enjoy views over Lisbon and the Tagus river from the hotel’s rooftop bar and restaurant, run by chef Nuno Mendes. And anyone in need of a sugary pick me up can head down to the ground floor patisserie for the requisite pastel de nata.
