Karl’s harks back to the glory days of Detroit’s classic diners

Retro without the kitsch

Vinyl banquettes and lino-covered walls evoke the heyday of the American diner in this downtown Detroit restaurant.

Karl’s is located inside the city’s Wurlitzer Building, which was once the headquarters of the jukebox manufacturer, but is now home to The Siren Hotel – which launched last year.

As well as its 106 rooms, the hotel has just opened the doors to Karl’s – an all-day restaurant in the style of a vintage diner. The menu is filled with classic American dishes, and the theme continues in the interiors which were created by ASH NYC.

Guests perch on pale green banquettes, beneath mirrors and walls covered in memorabilia. Marble-patterned linoleum lines the walls, and the counter is covered in mint green tiles. At night, the diner’s black and white chequerboard floor is lit up by strips of red neon lighting as well as an original Wurlitzer jukebox – packed with vintage records to accompany Karl’s list of classic cocktails.
