Architect Carl Trenfield designed this unique clifftop retreat in Kent’s Broadstairs, which has an intricate brick facade – and access to a private beach.
Flint House is named for the shards found along the beach and cliffs of the Kent coast, and they also inspire its black brick and timber clad exterior, which is inset with chequerboard patterning.
Built on the North Foreland Estate, the two-storey home is laid out like a series of interconnecting rectangular volumes. A double-height atrium, featuring a plywood staircase by Trenfield, leads into the kitchen and living room with custom wooden cabinetry and woodburning stove that sits atop a concrete plinth.
Three bedrooms are upstairs, while a fourth is on the ground floor, alongside a cosy snug. Polished concrete floors run throughout the house, and continue through sliding glass doors out to the garden patio planted with shrubs.
Flint House is on the market via The Modern House for £1.25m. It sits on the former groundkeeper’s cottage with views to the North Foreland lighthouse, and the owners of the Kent property have access to the estate’s residents-only beach.
