Pasadena’s storied Thomson Residence by architects Buff, Straub & Hensman is on the market for $2.125m, and the early post-and-beam design has undergone a total restoration.

The 1957 California property is among the Case Study architecture firm’s earliest experiments with interlocking beams – a style that emerged from the USC School of Architecture. It was given an award-winning refurbishment by subsequent owners, Christophe Burusco and Scott Lander of Lander Design, which won the City of Pasadena Preservation Award in 2012.

To roll back decades of wear and tear the duo restored every surface of the four-bedroom midcentury property – once photographed by Julius Schulman and now on the market via Deasy Penner Podley – and updated its bathroom and kitchen with modern appliances.

As well as walls of glass and exposed beams throughout, The Thomson Residence has board-and-batten walls, Formica surfaces, cork flooring and shoji sliding screens. An original redbrick fireplace takes pride of place in the soaring two-storey living room.
