Eco-enclaves and unsung post-industrial cities are among Airbnb’s 20 most popular destinations for 2020 with the USA’s Milwaukee coming out as the surprise top destination.
Bookings in the post-industrial city (best known for its rich brewing history, and its Art Deco and Art Nouveau architecture) soared by a whopping 729% from last year according to data from the house-sharing platform. It is set to host the Democratic National Convention next year, and visitors to the city can enjoy its thriving craft beer scene and its growing reputation as a foodie hotspot.
Spain’s Bilbao came in second, with a 402% YoY increase in bookings. As well as being European ‘City of the Year’ for 2018, Bilbao is also one of the host cities for the 2020 UEFA Euro competition, and it has a flourishing art scene anchored by the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum.
As expected, Olympics host Tokyo also features on the list in 17th position. But more surprising additions include Buriram in Thailand, Sunbury in Australia, and the remote archipelago nation of Vanuatu, 2,000 miles east of Australia.
