Germany has for centuries played a nine-pin bowling game called kegeln. Groups of friends and family gather in noisy kegelbahnen to play this traditional sport, but it’s the bowling alleys’ empty shells that fascinate Munich-based photographer Robert Götzfried. ‘I like to show places in ways people don’t usually see them,’ he explains.

Götzfried has captured alleys in and around Munich but their numbers are in decline. ‘Kegeln was a big deal when I was a child,’ he says. ‘These days, the bowling alleys are becoming rare and traditional ones are about to die.’

The photographer will continue to document them before they disappear, capturing this German tradition for future generations.
