David Adjaye Associates has unveiled designs for a London memorial that will honour the memory of Cherry Groce – who was unlawfully shot by police in her home in 1985.

The incident sparked two days of riots in Brixton, as well as leaving Groce paralysed. She passed away in 2011 as a direct result of her injuries, and it wasn’t until 2014 that the Metropolitan Police apologised for her wrongful shooting.

Adjaye unveiled visuals for the monument, commissioned by The Cherry Groce Foundation, and designed as both memorial and pavilion for Brixton’s Windrush Square. Its triangular roof will offer shelter from the sun and the rain, also referencing the Groce family’s roots by recalling the mountains of West Africa and Jamaica.

‘This memorial speaks to restorative justice and will symbolize what matters to the community,’ says Adjaye. ‘This tragedy went too long in the public realm without acknowledgement, and there is now renewed urgency and importance in finally facing this history.’

A GoFundMe campaign by the Foundation is raising £30,000 towards the cost of the memorial. Donate here.
