They say opposites attract – a sentiment that coursed through Jil Sander’s SS20 Milan presentation at the city’s Accademia di Brera yesterday.

Husband-and-wife design duo Luke and Lucie Meier are in their third year at the brand, which pioneers the idea of quality, simplicity and craftsmanship. Their latest collection dabbles in the extremes of minimalism and maximalism.

For the spectacle, they filled the hallowed courtyard of Milan’s most famous art school with ethereal white gravel sand dunes, which sprang up around the stony columns and sculpted plinths of its 18th-century interiors.

The pureness of the pebbles contrasted the high ornamentation of the building’s mouldings and carved sculptures – a ‘harmony’ reflected in the SS20 collection. Silk dresses, tailored suits and clean, fitted shirts were enlivened by embroidered raffia, beading and Florentine inspired prints.
