A new ‘floating’ pavilion has opened in Hyde Park in the form of a skeletal cafe by Mizzi Studio.

The Serpentine Coffee House encourages members of the public to spill out of the space by subverting traditional consorts of design. Its stingray-shaped roof seems to hover independently above the semi-transparent structure.

The canopy mirrors the soft waves of the nearby Serpentine waters, meanwhile, the exterior shimmers with a smooth, aged-brass finish and the underside dimples correlate in a snakeskin pattern.

Studio founder Jonathan Mizzi says: ‘Visitors will be greeted by the welcoming smile formed by the coffee shop’s curving canopy before the glistening reptilian underbelly is revealed.’

The London-based practice has designed 10 sculptural kiosks in partnership with Italian coffee brand Colicci, the final three of which will be revealed in autumn.
