Doug Aitken has unveiled a glistening Mirage house in Switzerland’s Gstaad as part of the Elevation 1049 festival.
The single-storey cabin is inspired by the ubiquitous ranch homes found across Aitken’s native California. Its mirrored facade reflects the landscape and the changing seasons, and the site-specific structure will remain in situ for two years.

Interiors are also mirrored, with fragmented panels creating a kaleidoscopic effect. Mirage Gstaad is open to the public, who can mill in and out of its open doors and take in dizzying vistas of the alpine landscape.
Elevate 1049 – which kicks off today and is produced by Luma Foundation in collaboration with The Store X Vinyl Factory – explores the theme ‘Frequencies’. It will feature art and live music performances by Suzanne Ciani, Vanessa Beecroft, Nina Beier, Zhana Ivanova, Liz Magic Laser, Isabel Lewis and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster among others.
