Property of the week: a painter’s retreat in Nacka, Sweden

Crowned by a dramatic studio space

Swedish landscape artist Richard Bergh commissioned this lofty, light-filled Nacka property as his home and studio in 1905.

Villa Bergh was designed by architect Albin Brag. The three-storey house – on the market via Svenska Maklarhuset for 14m SEK – is filled with surprising spaces and turn-of-the-century details.

At the top of the house is the real show-stopper – Bergh’s former studio. When commissioning the Swedish property, the artist asked Brag for northern light, a large balcony to dry his boards and canvases, and a huge window to remove his biggest artworks without damaging them.

The result is a voluminous studio space with a large fireplace at its heart where he would work.

Built-in shelving, cast iron elements and deep windows across the artist’s house are all original, while the living room has been given a minimalist update with white walls and dark wooden floors.

Villa Bergh is part of the Storängen commune, which was home to artists such as Georg and Hanna Pauli, as well as academics and intellectuals. The Nacka home also has access to the community’s shared amenities including a tennis and basketball court.
