Scandinavian design gets a contemporary spin inside Stockholm’s Nordic Light Hotel, which has emerged from a top-to-toe refurbishment by some of the region’s top design talents.

Bergen-based architect Todd Saunders oversaw the renovation of the Swedish bolthole, choosing natural materials that hone the Scandi feel, especially in the hotel’s public spaces. Pale wood panelling runs throughout the lobby and restaurant, paired with white marble and a palette of dark greys and rusty browns.

Says Saunders: ‘Designing Nordic Light was all about using natural, locally sourced materials to create a unique design. The result is a space that celebrates traditional Scandinavian design through a distinctive, modern vernacular.’

Meanwhile its 169 hotel rooms – which start from 1,090 SEK per night – are designed by fellow Canadian architect John Tong. He has taken cues from the Nordic landscape to craft pared-back interiors.

Timber panelling has been ditched in favour of a restrained colour scheme, contrasted with splashes of blue and minimal wooden furniture designed by roster of Scandinavian designers. These include lamps and tables – as well as stools and sofas in the lobby – by Jenny Nordberg, Amanda Karsberg and Johannes Norlander.

Says Tong: ‘We wanted to make a place where one need only to rely on simple intuition to choose, activate or find support for simple needs. Design elements do not hammer you over the head demanding your attention.’

The organic vibe continues in the hotel’s restaurant Lykke & Löjromsbaren, which serves Nordic cuisine and drinks made with locally sourced ingredients.
