This woodland home started life as part of a 19th-century paper mill in Wales’ Wye Valley.

Architect Brendan Woods converted the stone structure – originally used as the coach house for the Fernside paper mill complex – into a family home in 1979. He later extended the four-bedroom Monmouthshire property.

On the market via The Modern House for £675,000, the Welsh home skilfully blends old with new.

Four bedrooms and a library fill the lower level of the stone building – located five miles from Monmouth – while the living room and dining area are on the first floor. This vaulted space is capped by a partly glazed roof and rugged timber beams, and features exposed stone walls and wooden floors.

Woods added a glazed extension to the property in 1999, which houses the kitchen and looks onto a hillside at the rear of the house.

Few industrial buildings exist in designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so this Whitebrook home – which comes with approximately two acres of wooded land – is something of a rarity. Nestled in the grounds are the ruins of three stone ‘tanks’, originally used for making paper, and later, trout ponds, when the property was part of the Wye Valley fishery.
