It’s hosted everyone from politicians to royalty, and now the storied Astor Suite in New York’s Plaza Hotel is looking for a new owner.

Interior architect SR Gambrel designed the Manhattan apartment – on sale for a cool $39.5m via Douglas Elliman – enlisting the specialist artisans who rebuilt Windsor Castle after a fire devastated it in 1992. During the 20th century, President John F Kennedy and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor all stayed within its oak-panelled rooms.

Today the three-bedroom home mixes ‘old New York’ with new: rooms have hand-drawn, 14ft-tall plaster ceilings, wood panelling, hand-hammered leather walls and ornate period marble fireplaces. Its gallery-like walls are hung with contemporary art pieces, with a specialist humidity-controlling system protecting them, along with well as smart home technology.
